Azores Volcanology Holidays

Volcanology Holidays

The Azorean archipelago lies at the meeting points of the European, American and African tectonic plates. The islands were formed as a result of volcanic activity, and provide an important study area” for those interested in volcanology and potholing. The lakes at the bottom of the volcanic craters, or “caldeiras are one of the seminal tourist images of the Azores, but for Volcanologists there is much more to investigate. As well as “caldeiras” the islands offer caves, unique rock formations, hot springs, “escoadas lavicas” (lava shrouded surfaces known as “misterios”) and the evidence of the recent eruption of the Capelinhos volcano, which created an island later connected with Faial. For potholers, the descent to the bottom of steep ravines and the exploration of deep caves and rock tunnels offer an exciting opportunity. From stalagmites and stalactites to volcanic columns and cornices, there is so much to be discovered.

The people of Azores know what is to live with constant volcanic activity, but to an outsider this is all fascinating, and the Azorean Toursim Board have done a lot of work to make all this more accessible and understandable for visitors. The Museum at Capelinhos is a wonderfully interesting and modern installation, all in a building beneath a lighthouse which was covered in volcanic dust for many years after the last eruption in 1957. The layer of ash in the lighthouse’s wall and glasses is the evidence of the natural forces that formed the Azores.

The archipelago offers a unique opportunity for those who enjoy taking pictures of volcanoes. Every year volcanologists and eager volcano lovers go to Azores to spend a couple of days analysing and studying these wonderful creations. If you want to have the best view of the archipelago, then Pico is the place to go. Mt Pico is 2,351 mts  high and the highest point in the Azores. Everyone in the island recommends going and exploring this mountain in the middle of the Atlantic! Once there you can experience unique wildlife, which can only be found in this island. If your plan is to spend some days in Pico then be prepared with everything you need for a couple of days and remember to let somebody know that you are going up. It is however advisable not to go alone but rather in group, preferably with a guide who can show you the best spots of the mountain, and ensure your safety.
